Dynamic Baseball previews one of the top 17U travel teams in America – EvoShield Canes. Pictured  at left is Conway High School (SC) RHP/OF Grant Holmes who will be a Florida Gator after graduation. When Evoshield Canes 17U Coach Jeff Petty comes to the park this summer and fall, the hardest job he and his staff will have is deciding which professional prospect they want to start on the mound that day and who will bat lead off or in the 9 hole. The EvoCanes 17U team boasts 24 man roster with 21 Division I commitments.  On paper, this is arguably the best 17U Canes team in their 7 year history. 

 Coach Petty made it clear that there is plenty of work left to do, “There is no doubt that on paper our roster has the makings of something special but we have to come together as a team.  We have to remember to play for the name of the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.  If we do that, we are going to be hard to beat. We have some guys a lot of guys returning from within our program and a few new faces in Canes uniforms.  They are all very talented and should gel together very quickly. The way we do things is a team first concept.  Our guys have no problem sharing time and develop themselves in multiple positions.  We want them ready for college.  Most of our guys are middle of the order hitters with their high school teams so they will also have to adjust to hitting in different spots in the order.  Pitchers are going to have to accept their roles whether it’s a starter, middle relief or closer. It’s a fun summer ahead of us.  Our staff cannot wait to get started.”   Let’s see what Petty has to say about his players:

#1 DJ Burt – OF/INF – Fuquay Varina (NC) – Uncommitted – I have watched DJ play for 3 years now with our program and the best way to describe him is – spark plug.  He really makes things happen. Very versatile athlete who can play anywhere in the infield and outfield. We like DJ’s speed and think he is going to be big key to our success this summer.

#2 Chase Pinder – OF/INF – Poquoson (VA) – Clemson – Chase comes from a family of great athletes.  He had a great 2012 for us. Chase has great speed and is also very versatile athlete that can play infield and outfield. One thing we noticed last year is that the baseball seems to find Chase’s barrel. In order for us to win this year, Chase will have to swing it for a high average.

#3 Jack Owens – INF – Lake Braddock (VA) – East Carolina – Jack is a field rat.  It’s rare that he comes off the field with a clean uniform.  He plays with 100% effort all the time. We are looking for Jack to put up big numbers this year for us and be an everyday player in the middle infield. We need Jack to have a good year at the plate as well as play solid defense for us to be successful.

#5 Braden Webb – RHP – Owasso (OK) – South Carolina – Braden will be one of our frontline arms this year. He is a big game pitcher that threw some great games for us last year.  His fastball sits in the low 90’s and he commands 3 pitches. Webb loves to compete. We are really excited to have him with us full time this year.  Braden should be a slam dunk pick for All American games and a high draft pick in 2014.

#6 Zach Littell – RHP – Eastern Alamance (NC) – Appalachian State –Zach has one of those late birthdays so even though he is a 2013 graduate he can play for us again this summer. Littell was a big game pitcher for us last year.  He will be a stud on the mound for us again this year with his upper 80’s / low 90’s fastball.  He also has a solid pitchability to go with it. Great kid and teammate.

#7 Justin Bellinger – 1B/LHP – St. Sebastians (MA) – Vanderbilt – Justin is one of the most sought after players in the country in the 2014 class.  He has already been selected as a Perfect Game All American for 2013. I have not seen many kids that swing the lumber like Justin.  He is special.  I think he is a sure fire future major leaguer with the bat in his hands. He also possesses a 90 MPH fastball from the left side when he toes the rubber. Very competitive kid – e always wants to win when he takes the field and a great teammate.

#8 Charlie Cody – 3B – Great Bridge (VA) – Virginia –– Charlie is a special talent and is also one of the guys on this club that there will generate a lot of draft talk in 2014. Charlie has one of the purest swings I have seen in all my years of coaching.  To go with his power at the plate, he is a plus  runner (6.6). Charlie is a hard worker and dedicated athlete.  We expect big things out of Charlie this summer and beyond.  With Bellinger and Cody hitting back to back in our order, pitchers will have to pick their poison.

#9 Nick Bottari – C/1B/DH – Shoreham-Wading River (NY) – Miami – Nick is a physical right handed stick that we wanted to add our to our lineup.  When you talk hitters in the Northeast, Nick’s name is in the discussion.  Bottari is batting a minor injury now but will be with the team in late June.

#10 Daniel Gooden – LHP – Griffin (GA) – Georgia Tech –  Gooden will be playing with Evoshield Canes 16U at Perfect Game 16U WWBA and going to the 17U Perfect Game World Series in Phoenix, AZ this summer. Gooden is one of the top left handed pitchers in the country with a low 90’s fastball and a hard 12 to 6 breaking ball. He has great feel for his changeup as well. Gooden spent some time with the Canes last fall and the guys loved him.

#11 Hunter Taylor – C – Nandua (VA) – South Carolina – Taylor has the full package as a catcher – he’s a solid receiver and he can control the running game with his plus arm.  Pitchers love throwing to him.  Hunter was names the MVP of the PG Underclass Games last summer in San Diego, CA.  He is definitely the type of kid you want behind the dish being your signal caller in big situations. His bat is an added bonus as he hits for a high average and will run into some balls for power at times too. Great teammate!

#12 Taylor Lane – INF – Great Bridge – Florida – Lane is one of the best athletes in the 2014 class. Big strong physical frame.  He can really hit and he is a plus runner. Taylor plays all 3 infield positions and is athletic enough to make the move to the Outfield if needed.  Taylor could make some waves in next year’s draft – a lot of scouts are high on him.

#14 Grant Holmes – RHP/OF – Conway (SC) – Florida – Holmes is committed to play college baseball for Kevin O’Sullivan and the Florida Gators.   Holmes is truly one of the top right handed pitchers in the United States in the 2014 class with a low to mid 90’s fastball and electric secondary stuff to go with it. Holmes also has some pop at the plate that will get him some regular time in the Evoshield Canes Outfield this summer/fall.  Holmes should be a slam dunk pick for All American games and a high draft pick in 2014.

 #15 Troy Stokes Jr – OF – Calvert Hall (MD) – Maryland – Troy has as much power as any other outfielder in the 2014 class. He is also a plus plus runner. Rarely do you see an outfielder that possesses the combo of speed and power that Troy has.  With a big summer, Troy’s draft stock could skyrocket.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see Troy patrolling the outfield for a major league team in the next 4-5 years.

#17 Blake Bivens – RHP – GW Danville – Liberty – Blake is one of the top right handers in the mid-atlantic region.  He has command of 3 pitches, including a fastball that touches 90.  Blake has earned the ball in many big games for us and he will get it again. Blake has a great upside.  We are excited to see what kind of a year he will have for us.

#19 Derek Casey – RHP – Hanover (VA) – Virginia – Derek is also in that class of top pitchers in the 2014 class in the United States. Casey should be a slam dunk for Under Armour All American Game and Perfect Game All American Game. Reports have had him up to 96 MPH this spring. Casey is no stranger to success, and pitching big games. As an underclassman, Derek pitched a complete game against the Diamond Devils for a playoff win at the WWBA in Jupiter, FL.  With Derek’s continued hard work and a year with Jamie Evans, his name could be called VERY early in the draft.

#21 – Kaleb Roper – RHP – Rummel (LA) – Uncommitted – Kaleb is a right handed pitcher we fell in love with last fall at the Perfect Game Underclass WWBA in Ft. Myers, Florida. He competes with an upper 80’s fastball that has been reported to be in the low 90’s at times this spring but his biggest asset is pure power breaking ball.  EvoCanes pitching coach, Jamie Evans, compares the breaking ball to that of Canes alum and Chicago Cub farmhand, Dillon Maples.  We feel Roper is going to pitch some big innings for us this summer/fall and we don’t think he will be uncommitted for long.

#22 – Junior Harding – RHP – Cambridge (MD) – South Carolina – Junior may have the best velocity in the United States in the 2014 class.  Harding broke the 15U PG WWBA velocity record last summer and there is plenty more in the tank.  He has been up to 98 this spring.  We may see triple digits from him soon.  Yeah…you read that right…100 mph is not out of reach for Harding.  With that kind of gas, it is an easy decision to give him the ball in the late innings as our closer.   He also has a power breaking ball to go with it.  Junior should be a slam dunk pick for All American games and a high draft pick in 2014.

#23 Hunter Williams – LHP/1B/OF – Cosby (VA) – North Carolina – Williams has been with the Canes since his freshman year and what a player he has developed into. Hunter is a horse on the mound with a low 90’s fastball and great feel for his offspeed stuff.   Hunter is another power bat in our lineup.  He has shown he can handle top flight pitch and he hammers mistakes.  As in the past, Hunter should stand out in our lineup.  He is a great kid to be around and is a team guy! Hunter made the East Coast Pro team last year as a sophomore, only 1 of 3 sophomores on the rosters. This will be a big year for Williams to see where his draft stock goes.

#27 Jack Gerstenmaier – INF – Douglass Freeman (VA) – Virginia – Gerstenmaier is back for his 3^rd year with the Evoshield Canes program.  Jack is a sub 6.6 runner in the 60 with a 90 MPH arm across the diamond. You will have to search pretty hard to find a player that plays harder than Jack does.  Jack hits for average as well as power.  He has also become a plus defender. Jack should be a no brainer East Coast Pro roster player and will make his case as being one of the top prospects in this region as the summer and fall play out. This just like a lot of his Canes teammates is a big year for him in raising his draft stock.

#33 Sean Collins – RHP – Weddington (NC) – Virginia – Sean is a big RHP that has a low 90’s fastball and the ability to locate 3 pitches for a strike. Already committed to UVA, he hasn’t scratched the surface on how good he could be.  Sean has always been a go to type of arm and this summer will be no different.  We expect Sean to toe the rubber in some big games for us as we try to win another PG ring.  We are really excited about the addition of Sean to our staff.

#35 Jason Morgan – RHP – Chancellor (VA) – North Carolina – Morgan was considered by many to be the top performer last year in the 2012 summer/fall season for the Canes in the 2014 class. Just about every time Morgan took the mound last year, it resulted in a EvoCanes win. Standing at 6’5” and 180 pounds, Morgan pitches in the upper 80’s with his fastball with a lot of sink. Morgan is a ground ball machine.  He pounds the zone with all 3 pitches.   He is another Canes arm with a lot of upside.

#45 Keven Pimentel – RHP – Shoreham-Wading River (NY) – Uncommitted – Keven is a 6’3” RHP from New York with plus stuff.  He has an electric arm that will bring pro scouts to the park to see the  Evoshield Canes.  After a few outings, we think someone will jump on him with an offer.  We are excited to add Keven to our pitching staff.

#77 – Dominick Cammarata – C – TC Roberson (NC) – Uncommitted – When we added Dominick in the off season, we were really excited.  He has a great build.  He’s a great receiver with a plus arm…and he mashes.  Previously committed to Georgia, he is now available with Coach Perno’s departure.  This will be a big year for him and whoever is lucky enough to land him.
